This week, we practiced class routines. These will be very important for our three grades to work well together. Our class has places for everything and ways we can hand in work, ask questions and do activities so that students can work independently. We also create class expectations. Students came up with the classroom rules for this year as a group. They are: 1 - Be kind and respectful to everything and everyone.2 - Be safe and make everyone feel safe.3 - Respect the learning of others.4 - Listen actively to the speaker.5 - Be responsible and work hard.6 - We all need to be helpful.
We have also created a list of classroom jobs and expectations for each job. When students arrive in the morning, from 7:50-8:05 am, students will help get our room ready for the day. We will have time in the afternoon most days to work on class jobs too.
Students are being assessed on spelling words this week. There are about 300 high-frequency words we will attempt to master this year. Students have done 20 minute spelling tests each day this week to see which words they already know how to spell, then they will choose 10 words a week they need to practice. Our morning routine Tuesday-Friday will have students doing a spelling practice activity, then a practice test with a partner. If they get the spelling word correct 4 times in the week, they can then select a new word for the next week. If they don't get it correct 4 times (even if it's 3 times right), they will have that word in their spelling list for the next week.
We have done fire drills and will do a lockdown procedure on Friday. During our fire drill, the whole school was able to exit the building in under a minute!
